LEXINGTON — Richard Wayne Davenport, 72, of Cardinal Drive, died Monday, July 7, 2008, at his home. Mr. Davenport was born in Vanderburg County, Ind. on July 12, 1935, to Preston Davenport and Claudia Rigsby Davenport Bland. He was a retired Corpsman from the U.S. Navy. During Mr. Davenport’s navy career, he served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. Following his retirement, he was a salesperson for Metropolitan Medical Incorporated. Memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church with Father Albert J. Gondek officiating. Military rites will be provided by V.F.W. Post 3074. Rufus Embry ATLANTA, GA. — Mr. Rufus Eugene Embry, 73, beloved husband of Sybil Davis Embry, died in Atlanta, Ga. Sunday, July 6, 2008, after a short illness of lung cancer. He was born April 8, 1935 in Thomasville, to Hoke and Pattie Finch Embry. He was the last survivor of their four sons; Tyree, Raymond and Edward Embry. He is survived by his wife of 54 years; a son, David Eugene Embry of Broken Arrow, Okla.; daughters, Janet Embry Flynn of Lawrenceville, Ga. and Lisa Embry Peterson of Kansas City, Mo. He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Ashley, Stewart, Austin, David, Mark and Derek. Mr. Embry served in the military and began his career with the Greensboro Police Department in 1957. At the time of his retirement, he was serving as Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Department of Justice, Atlanta, Ga. While living in Greensboro, he became a member of the Grand Lodge of N.C., Revolution Lodge #552. Later while living in Anderson, S.C., Mr. Embry was ordained as a Deacon at Concord Baptist Church (a member of the Southern Baptist Convention). His favorite expression was, “If you take care of the little things, the big things will take care of themselves.” Visitation with the family was held at Tom Wages Funeral Home in Atlanta, Ga. on Wednesday. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Thomasville by the Rev. Bynum Orr. Jimmy Haire LEXINGTON — James L. “Jimmy” Haire Jr., 68, of Woodhaven Drive, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at his residence. He was born in Davidson County on Oct. 5, 1939, to James Leonard Haire and Peral West Haire. He was a retired sales representative with The H.T. Hackney Company and member of Fairmont Presbyterian Church and a former Elder. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Fairmont Presbyterian Church with the Rev. J. Randy Hall officiating. Mr. Haire requested that his body be donated to Wake Forest University Baptist School of Medicine for research. Pauline Hinshaw THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Pauline Ingram Hinshaw, 90, a resident of Georgia Ave. in Thomasville, died Tuesday July 8, 2008, at Piedmont Crossing Retirement Community. A lifelong resident of Davidson County, Pauline was born on July 1, 1918, a daughter to Charles F. and Della Yates Ingram. She was retired from Thomasville Furniture Industries and attended Carolina Memorial Baptist Church. Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and four sisters. In 1937 she married William Paul Hinshaw who died April 29, 1964. Surviving are her daughter Nancy Stamey and her husband, Herbert, of Charleston, S.C.; sons, Terry Hinshaw of Thomasville and Pete Hinshaw and his wife, Karen, of Thomasville; grandchildren, Craig Stamey, Jennifer Ellis, Misty Holland, Dustin Hinshaw and Austin Hinshaw; and great-grandchildren, Tate Stamey and Ethan Stamey. Funeral service for Mrs. Hinshaw will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Carolina Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Brooks L. Hunt officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Clarence Pringle LEXINGTON – Clarence Edward Nealy “Pinky” Pringle, 58, of 414 Moore St., formerly of Winston-Salem, died Monday morning, July 7, 2008, in Wake Forest University Bapist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Surviving are daughters La’Shonda Nealy and La’Tonya Nealey, both of Lexington; one son, Ja’Ron Gardner of Wilson, N.C.; sisters, Gloria (William) Hairston and Linda Pringle, both of Lexington; one brother, Edward (Elizabeth) Pringle of Junction City, Kan.; and five grandchildren. Alma Smith THOMSAVILLE — Mrs. Alma Ruth Lomax Smith, 87, formerly of Lake Road, died Tuesday afternoon, July 8, 2008, in the Hospice Home of High Point. She was born September 8, 1920, in Guilford County, a daughter of the late Odell W. Lomax and Rosa Stanley Lomax. She was a retired employee of Modern Carving, Inc., with over twenty-five years of service. Mrs. Smith was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, the Adult Sunday School Class and the Women’s Society. She was married to Grady Arnold Smith, who died April 12, 1997. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Donnie Leonard in 1986. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Saundra Leonard and her husband, Rayvon, and Mrs. Linda McGee and her husband, Paul, all of Thomasville; grandchildren, Scott McGee and his wife, Gay, of Denton and Tracey Lyndon and her fiancé, Chris Boggs, of Thomasville; and great-granddaughters, Callie McGee and Hunter McGee. He retired as Founder and President of Warfford Machine, Inc. which he operated for 55 years. He was the oldest member, a former Deacon, and Trustee of Holloways Baptist Church. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Holloways Baptist Church with the Rev. Craig Barnhill and the Rev. R.N. Hardin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Wiley Winters THOMASVILLE — Mr. Wiley Wesley Winters, 75, a resident of 112 Woodland Lane, died Tuesday evening, July 8, 2008, in the Hospice Home of High Point. He was born March 3, 1933, in Davie County, a son of the late Sampson Winters and Minnie Barney Winters. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served 10 ½ years. He was the former plant manager for Mac Panel of High Point and had served as a machinist for David Miller, Inc. of High Point. Prior to retirement, he was owner and operator of Wiley Winters Realty. He was a former board member and treasurer of the High Point Board of Realtors. He was a member of Holly Hill Wesleyan Church, and was a former usher, church treasurer and member of the Wesleyan men. On June 25, 1960 he was married to Peggy Segers who survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Ballew and husband, Thomas Wayne, of Lexington; a grandson, Travis Ballew of Lexington; a sister, Mrs. Betty Potts and husband, Gray, of Advance; and a brother, Bobby Winters and his wife, Jackie, of Mocksville. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Holly Hill Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Mark Mullins and the Rev. Jeff Beverly officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Mr. Winters will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until taken to the church thirty minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and other times at the home.
