TIMES Staff Report

-
The Western Carolina University music department will host the 26th annual Honor Band Weekend on April 7 and 8, featuring performances by selected high school musicians and by the WCU Symphony Band and Wind Ensemble.

About 200 high school students will come from 60 high schools from around North and South Carolina — including Thomasville Senior High School — Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia.

Students are nominated for the clinic by their hometown band director and selected based upon their musical proficiency.

This year’s clinics will be led by Richard Clary, senior wind band conductor at Florida State University, and Frank Wickes, director of bands at Louisiana State University.

Western’s Wind Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, April 7. Western’s Symphony Band will play at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8.

The Honor Band concert, featuring the high school musicians, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday after all bands have practiced in intense rehearsals both days.
