Local woman's painting of Big Chair to be auctioned at Spring Daze Festival

Times Correspondent Gloria Delgadillo - The Thomasville Beautification Committee is very proud of a great benefactor. Pat Hudson, who at the age of four discovered her talent after she was punished for drawing on her grandmother’s wall, has painted a watercolor of the Big Chair with the flowers in full bloom. The painting will be auctioned (silent auction) during the Spring Daze at the Depot festivities on Saturday.
The painting that she has done for the Beautification Committee already has a bid of $250, which was made by her husband Jim, who is executive vice-president of First Bank. Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit future projects of the City Beautification Committee. There will also be prints of this original for sale. To obtain one of these prints, orders may be placed at the Beautification Committee’s Booth. The price to order them in advance is $50. The Fram House on Main Street is also offering a 15 percent discount on framing for anyone purchasing prints of the Big Chair.
Hudson obtained her degree in fine arts at UNC-Chapel Hill. She went on to study commercial drawing at Guilford Tech. She has a large assortment of watercolor scenes of different places in Thomasville.
When asked what her favorite paintings are she said, “I prefer to paint people over scenery,” which is evident throughout her home and studio, which are filled with paintings of her family. Her paintings are watercolor and takes longer to paint than other mediums. Yet, she prefers watercolors because she enjoys the mixing of the different colors, which is sometimes very important. The bright, beautiful colors offered through watercolors are immediately visible in her paintings.
Aside from being hobby, Hudson claims that she also paints for exercise.
“I am not an athlete and painting is often my therapy because it tends to get me in a better mood when I am feeling low,” Hudson said.
City Beautification Committee Chairperson Carol Brown was excited about Hudson’s work and the help the proceeds will offer the committee.
“We are thankful for the generosity of Pat Hudson because aside from the painting being beautiful, it will be a good source of funds for other projects of the Committee,” Brown said.
